* W3 Story Retelling Activity Reflection *

1. The Sookmyung Times

Our first activity was The Sookmyung Times which was to find who stole a missing limited edition Noonsong Family, and it was similar with Storm Destroys Priceless Relationship activity. There was 5 roles, 4 suspects and 1 detector, and I became a detector by a simple ladder game. Each person has to speak to argue their innocence, so that participation was so high. Although this kind of high participation usually can lead to one-sided argument that person with big voice only talk and with small voice become silent, our host give each members questions which make each members have fair chance to talk.

Frankly speaking, I was unwilling to do my role, because I was selected to be a detector. I am a kind of person who is emotional, rather than logical, and subjective, rather than objective, so it was so hard to play a role. Moreover, host of this game didnt make the real suspect, and just make only suspicious conditions for every roles, so that every roles only keep saying their own arguments, which make me so confused. However, our host also did a same role with me fortunately, and she helped me a lot. It was a valuable activity in that everyone pursue their own argument.

2. 22 Elementary, My Dear Watson

Our second activity was 22 Elementary, My Dear Watson which was to find who kill Mr. Crabtree last night. All the team members were detector, and we have to find the suspect using clues which host gave to us. Because of limitation of small team table, 2 members saw the clues together and 3 members, including me, saw the clues together. Every time we open the clues, we get more curious, so we are going to talk less gradually. Therefore, every member participated but didnt talk much relative to the first activity.

However, when we get the final clues, then we started to talk about our own guess. Moreover, relative to the first activity, because we are a one team, and accomplish this activity together, pressure that I have to do everything with my own power was not that much. I feel relaxed, so I can pretty much enjoy this activity.

On the third week's class, we did two speaking activities being hosted by our group members. The first activity was guessing who the criminal is and speaking why this person is the criminal. This activity was hosted by Eun Bin and she suggested a situation like this: A limited edition Noonsong, which is known as a main character of Sookmyung Women's University, was reported missing by their owner, Raina. Eunbin gave a paper explaining the timetable and the characteristics of suspects. The timetable was like this: On 10:30 a.m, Raina went to class, leaving the Noonsong family in the cabinet of room 304b. On 12:00 p.m: When Raina stopped by for her books, Suyeon and Gina were arguing about something. At 2:45 p.m, Rachel came in for late lunch, and stayed for an hour to finish her homework. At 3:20 p.m, Raina and Gina watched  youtube vidieos before going to 4:00 class they take toghether. On 4:00 p.m. Susan came in and stayed for 30 minutes, mistaking it for another room. On 4:40 p.m, Susan came early for the student council meeting so she decided to take a nap on the couch. At 5:40 p.m, Student council meeting was hosted in room 304b. Then, Noonsong reported missing on 8:30 p.m. Gina is a junior in TESL major and she enjoys collecting Noonsong items. Suyeong was Raina's closest friend and fought with Raina. Susan is a freshman in eucation major and she has no relation to Raina and anyone in TESL major at all. Rachel is a junior in TESL major and scurrently taking a semester off. The caracters was chosen randomly, so I was chosen as Suyeon. People who are suspects in this happening have to detect who the criminal is. Also, people have to explain why they are not criminals. I explained my alibi: I fought with Raina, but it was really private. The reason why I fought with her was deciding who the best professor of TESL is. Also, I already gathered Noonsong. I don't want to collect Noonsong anymore and I don't want to break our friendship because of this. Gina, Susan, and Rachel also explained their activity and the most suspectful person was Rachel. Although she took a semester off, she came to room 304b. She said she came to the school because she had to consult about exchange student program with university. However, lots of group members didn't believe it. There was no anwers, but It was really great activity because it can improve to speak "cause/effect" sentences and support their opinions. Students can learn "cause/effect" sentences and supporting their claims by speaking "I think 000 stole Noonsong because..." or "Therefore I didn't steal Noonsong.."

The second activity was simillar with the first activity, but it is a little bit different. It was hosted by Eun Jin and The name of second activity "Elementary, my dear watson". This activity adapted Sherlock, which is globally popular detective novel. Like the first activity, People should find who the criminal is. However, it is more serious than the first activity. Eun Jin gave a situation like this: Alec Crabtree was found dead at his desk in his study last night. He has been hit on the head whith a blunt object. He had been sitting at the desk with his back to the dook, and was in the middle of writing a letter. He was found by his wife, when she went in to bring him his bedtime cocoa at 11:15 p.m However, his watch had stopped at 11:05 p.m The suspects are Mrs. Crabtree, Daniel Crabtree, Mr and Mrs. Fairfax. First, we got an alibai. We had to collect alibais step by step, so we had to guess relationship between the suspect's family name and first name. As a result, Alice was Mrs. Fairfax and Anne was Mrs. Crabtree. Also, we had to find a reason what the deadly weapon is. By collecting alibais, we found silver vas was the deadly weapon. We found bloods on the window, cigarettes on the bed, and red fabric on the floor. Mr.Crabtree was not smoker and Mrs. Cfrabtree and Mrs. Fairfax wore red clothes. Finally, we found the criminal; Mrs. Crabtree and she murdered Mr. Crabtree because Mr. Crabtree were in affair. This activity focused on gussing who the criminal is and speaking the reason why the criminall killed the victim. It can improves our suggesting skill and supporting our opinion like "I think 000 killed Mr. Crabtree because...."

Both of activities improved our guessing skills, and speaking "cause/effect" and supporting our opinions. I think these activities were such a meaningful activities. I also want to host these kinds of activities if I have an opportunity.

For week three, we started bringing in our own materials for speaking practice. I was in charge of class materials for this week, so I created a speaking activity called Who took NoonSong Family. As for the activity, two people, including me, were supposed to be the investigators, asking various questions to the remaining four group members. The four, on the other hand, were supposed to come up with an alibi and persuade others that theyre innocent, while questioning the other suspects, so that they wouldnt be questioned themselves. The goal of the activity was for the group members to actively and constantly speak throughout the given time. I was really pleased with the result, because everyone participated very well throughout the activity. When creating the content, I was a bit worried that people would stay quiet, and only answer the questions asked my the investigator and I. However, to my surprise, they came up with really good questions for the other suspects too. However, I feel that the four suspects were able to practice both questioning and persuading aspects of English, while the investigator only got to question. So, for the next time Im hosting, I will pay more attention to making sure that everyone gets the same chance of practicing certain speaking skills.

For the second activity, we engaged in a guessing game, where we looked at clues to a certain crime scene, discuss each clue, and then coming up with the possible plot of a crime scene. This activity was in fact a lot similar to mine, in that they both involved crime scene. However, it was different in that for this activity, all the group members were able to discuss and work together to find the actual criminal. The crime scenario was very interesting, and I just kept on wanting to see more clue, so I was able to figure out the plot of crime first. However, I felt like I kind of drove the whole group to faster discussions so we could look at more clues. Also, I feel that I should have given more chances for other group members to discuss, even though I figured out the criminal first. I will definitely keep this in mind for next thursday, when we have group sessions again, and will try to give more chances for others to have discussions. Other than that, the activity was really interesting, and it was fun because everyone came up with different possible situations for the crime at first, but we talked our way through the same plot at the end.

Overall, I think the first day of materials hosting went great. Im very glad to have group members who participate so willingly.

Missing Noonsong Family!

The first activity wed done was figuring out who stole Reinas Noonsong Family. There were four suspects and one investigator and we played role play together. The host handed out the paper designed as a newspaper. It includes the timeline of who came in and out of 304b and the information of each characters. I took a role as Gina Park and the things I have to do was defending myself and proving innocence of mine to investigator. We got few minutes to read and understand our characters. Then, we made up a story by matching the timeline.

I think I didnt fully understand what were about to do so I had no idea what I should say at the first place. The hardest thing for me was to make a story in no time. For example, Gina fought with Suyeon and Gina and Rachel was in that room for a long time without knowing what theyd been doing each other. I suppose the story were made before start so the investigator investigate us.

However, on the other side, it lets us to think and make a story instantly and it was quite fun to make unreasonable story. Arguing with and accusing suspects were really funny and the story was ridiculously fun also. The object, Noonsong Family, was so familiar that it makes the activity more interesting.

Elementary, my dear Watson

I was the second host of the day. The first host of my group also prepared same subject of activity which was to find who committed crime. I was worried because doing two similar activities in a row could have make students bored or less interested in.

This activity is student-centered group activity. This is designed to let students practice giving reasons and expressing degrees of certainty. The input ,which was short reading, contains several vocabulary they might have not known. The objectives of the game was to find out who the murderer was.

I prepared five sheets of study-case and two piles of 20 clue-cards. Also, I made a script just in case that I got too nervous to come up with sentences I should say. After short introduction of the activity, I handed out everyone copies of study-case and let them read. Plus, I asked them weather the text was understandable or not. Then, I set two sets of clue cards in order to ease them to read, which unintentionally splits them into two groups. To help their understanding, I gave an example of how to make deduction and giving reasons.

During the activity, the pace was different between two groups. They were so curious that one group cant wait to read next clue cars. More than reading, I encouraged them to speak out their suspicion and gave them some hint when then felt lost. At the end, theyd done great job and gotten correct answer.

The activity was done earlier then Id expected. I think it would be better if I gave them a minute to think and talk for one clue card. It was useful to make sentences of possibility.  That might encourage them to talk with group members and not feel rush. Lastly, I, as a host, had a lots of fun and I guess my guests would have fun either!

The Sookmyung times

The instructor gives us a brief news line that Raina, a tesl major student in Sookmyung, missed a limited edition NoonSong Family put in the cabinet of room 304b after she came from class. The lines give different times, places and people who are in 304b. Raina is played by the host, and the other 4 of group members are required to play the role of other people and defend themselves. In the meantime, there is an investigator who are obliged to ask the suspects questions.

Roles are set in a basis that everybody has motivation to steal the item. In the profile page, Gina Park is a collector of Noonsong; Suyeon Kwon fought with Raina the day before Noonsoon went missing; Susan loves Noonsong more than anything; Rachel Kim is Rainas arch enemy.

The host gives some time for everyone to make up stories of their own. Because in the following minutes, the investigator will try to investigate the truth from suspects words and we can also ask each other, which sounds like a debate. We had better make use of their advantageous description and cover the disadvantage. We had better, in general, to explain every information that show on the page sensible and have nothing to do with the missing Noonsong.

First, I think the profile picture of Gina and Rachael should change into a female one or the name could change into male one. Second, there should be a truth or hidden clues that only some of people know if our purpose is to find out the truth. It is similar to story retell, but it is less interactive because the 4 suspects are not related to each other at all, only with Raina. I think it would be better for the 4 to divide into 2 criminal groups and make up the story together and to debate with the other group.

The Death of Mr. Crabtree

This activity is about case of crime, too. Under the basic information such as name of victim, when and how he found dead, the host will give clues one by one. And after each clue was given, we need to discuss what we could infer from this. The input is meaningful and mostly comprehensible. Some of us learn new words about object, by asking others.

However, It may occur that there are will be only a few who express their guessing and others just listen and say yes, for it doesnt have to relate to each of us. And if we stick to the answer of what the host later give us, we will find that there are before so many clues that are distracting. With clues that draw different suspect into focus, actually, we can come up with different explanation of who is the real criminal. If we categorize these and team up, maybe we can start to debate and make this activity more interactive.

The Sookmyung Times NoonSong Family is missing

This activity was like a deductive game. Each person takes some the role and tries to persuade others that she is not the one who stole the NoonSong Family. There were two investigators who asked questions and the four people had to tell their alibi in order to avoid any suspicion.

I liked this activity because everything was made by the host. She considered every single part so that the players could play the game without much confusion. I liked it when she gave some interesting facts or characteristics to all the characters in the game which were the key points of the game. Moreover, as this activity requires everyone to talk, we could speak with every single group members asking some questions. As a result, we could practice speaking using some useful expressions. To be honest, it was quite hard for me to play the game as Im really bad at acting:P It was so fun that I want to play the game with different topic, again. Great Work!!

Elementary, my dear Watson

This activity was also a deductive game finding out who killed Mr. Watson. There are some characters that are suspicious for killing Mr. Watson and we had to find the criminal with some cards that have hints on it. Everyone had to open the card at the same time and try to figure out what happened in the house by sharing their ideas.

The host actually prepared a lot of things such as a picture, cards and explanation of the game; and it helped us focusing on the game well. At first, it was quite confusing because the hints given by the cards are somewhat ambiguous just as any other deductive game. However, as we got deeper and deeper, the answer got so clear that we could find the criminal easily. However, I think it could have been better if we got some fixed time to see the hints. As we wanted to find out the criminal so much, we just read the hints cards so quickly. As a result the game ended too early. Otherwise, the game was super fun! Thank you for your work!
