* W10 Host Preparing Activity Reflection *

1. Guessing Game

This time host prepared a new game, which is to guess the answer. On the application, there are various categories, such as movie, celebrity, accent, science, pop songs, animal, etc. The runner clicks the category, then the game starts, and the word related to that category comes out in order. Runner has to put smart phone on her head, not to see the answer, and at the same time others have to explain the words, so that the runner can guess it.

On the pedagogical point of view, this game would be very comfortable for the teacher, as it is easy to prepare, and all she has to do is to select the words based on students language level. It can be used as a fun activity for getting used to speaking English. Moreover, after giving them vocabulary list to memorize for some time, it can be used as a fun test to check whether they memorize and understand the words completely, or not. This game has multiple purposes not only as a fun activity, but also as a material for learning speaking skills and words.

2. Desert Island Game

This time host prepared new games, desert island games. In the first game, we decided what to bring if we accidentally stuck in a desert island. We had to consider a lot of possible situations such as existence of wild animals or mosquitos, a rescue ship, etc. Moreover we even made it such as killing the rest 4 people and taking their stuff for ourselves, training the dog in island and making him catch fish to eat as a food, etc.

Then, we played a role game. The host gave us character paper for each, and there was description about that character. We had to persuade others that their own character should on the lifeboat that only three person can get ride. In persuasion, we made lots of discussion, which was fun, and active. These all activities made us think more creatively and deeply, and I think young students can get lots of educational thinking skills from this activity.

Shipwrecked

It was problem-solving activity with group members. There were two different sessions; prioritizing and role-play. For the first session, they got a list of item for survival in a desert island. Prior to the discussion, they taught and talked in pairs to decide the most valuable items. After that, they freely discussed and showed their idea and the following reasons. To encourage them to speak, the host (I) put some situation that can facilitate the discussion and let them think in the different perspectives. By varying the size of partners; pair works into group works, the learners can get involved in the activity equally. In terms of negotiation, they shared and comparing their results for making agreement. For the next session, I handed out the script of roles to members and ask for them to act like it. We had an argument to appeal themselves to be survived. However, some members gave up to argue because they thought the person they got was useless. So I handed one more roles to them, then they integrated the roles into one then we talked freely.

Charades

The game was taken by an application called Charades. She made categorised lists of words that we might know. It was a small group activity but can be a pair work. If one person puts the phone on her forehead while the screen is forward others. Rest of them will explain the words in spoken forms. It pushed us to speak out and use non-verbal communication such as hand gesture. The game was easy if the player shared same culture or language. We explained the world in a very easy way. Specifically, in the food category, we used translation and it was so easy to guess. I think if we had more restriction and prohibited words like taboo, it can give student to used more unfamiliar vocabulary or structures.

Overall, we had similar amount of time to participant in the speech and it was so much fun!

On tenth week, we did two  interesting speaking activities: Charades and Shipwrecked. Since the rules were simple and easy, I think it is helpful to young children.

1. Charades

First, our activity host prepared 'Charades' activities. This game is used many times in Korean TV show, so most of us are used to playing this activities. The rule is very simple: 1. Student select one topic such as celebrities, science, movies and so on. 2. One student put the word cards being related with the topic on her head. If the topic is movies, 'La-la land' will be the word card. 3. Other student should describe about the word card. The student who put the card on her head cannot see the anwer. 4. Student should guess the answer correctly as many as possible.

I think this activity is really helpful to use as an ice-breaker because it can stimulates students' interest. Moreover, it can improve student's description ability because students should describe something to the student. It is also helpful for teacher because teacher can prepare without pressures and children can participate as much as possible. However, I think it can be better to choose more universal topics. Some topics were not that popular, so students cannot describe topics well.

2. Shipwrecked

Second, our activity host prepared 'Shipwrecked' activities. I learned this activity on other claases, so I know this game well. This game is divided into two games: Selecting Items and Role-Playing. Like Charades, the rule is really simple: 1. Students should think "If I were in desert island, which item should I have?". The examples of items are like this: rescue boat, salt, knife and so on. 2. After deciding items, students play role game. Students get papers which describe person in desert island. One student can be a priest, another student can be a baby. 3. Student should think " Who should be survived in desert island?" and explain their own situation to others.

I think this activity is helpful when they learned persuading expressions. Because students should explain their situation and persuade to others, This activity will be helpful. However, I think it can be better to decide the winner because young students like distinguishing winner and loser of the game.

For week 10, I brought in the game Charades! via Iphone for my group. Personally, when I tested out the game in advance, I realized that most of the words used in the app were a little bit more challenging compared to the level of words we used in other materials throughout the semester, because they were more culture-based, and most of them were not very well known in Korea. Therefore, I designed my own set of words on the application (We can do that! Such a high-tech world we live in), making the words a bit more easier and more known for Koreans in general. My general goal for this weeks hosting was to make the 30 minutes as exciting as possible, because in my personal opinion, the whole group was kind of dead the last time we had materials hosting. Which is probably because of the midterms, but I still wanted to come up with something everyone will enjoy. In the end, I think everyone had at least some fun, which I was pretty satisfied with. On top of that, everyone participated equally well, which I was really thankful for as well.

My other host (and my Chemistry friend) (she cute) brought in a game where we had to choose 5 objects to take with us, while trying to survive in a deserted island. There were very interesting options such as a bottle of Vodka, box of chocolate, Weed, and so on. And we all had a lot of fun deciding what to bring as well. At first everyone had different ideas about what they want to bring, but in the end we were able to come up with the final 5 objects. After that, we played a role playing activity where we were all on a boat and we had to get rid of some of us for the others to survive. I had the role of a mother with two children at home, which made it super easy for me to be the surviving one! So that was fun! It was also fun because we havent had a role playing activity in a while, so it took us back a little, and I feel like compared to the very beginning of the semester, everyone generally was able to get into their characters a lot faster and better! It was nice to be able to see the improvement.

Guessing game(?)

The first activity is a guessing game. Each member, in turn, holds a smart phone in front of head. The others describe anything that appear on the screen and the phone holder tries to guess. What we guess are hidden behind categories. For example, celebrities, fairy tales, science, music hits and etc.

I think it is a good game for most adults but not all. To be honest, I do not know most things. For those live in the similar value, it must be fun. For me it was interesting because I am always curious and sometimes, team members can literally describe the vocabulary on the screen without knowing what is on it. The game is such a real world game since the words are totally not academic except those scientific concepts and usually existing limited persons name or concepts.

Surviving game

In this game, we are asked to discuss what five things do we need under the situation that we have to survive in an isolated island. The host give us a list of objects. Later on, the host provided each of us a character card and said a boat comes, however, the boat could only take three people away while the two of us will have to remain. We have to argue to make ourselves be taken since there are reasons that we must live on on the card. The activity focuses on interaction and cooperation. We communicated a lot. The character card ensures that everybody speaks. However, all we did is just imagine lol.
