The first activity Sophie brought in for the class was an adjective bingo. She printed out a sheet of paper with lots of adjectives that we could use on our bingo board. Then, as we were playing, we had to come up with a sentence containing the adjective were crossing out, and everyone had to continue on from the first sentence, to make a story! The first sentence, made by me, was Im lucky to be me. Using lucky as the adjective. It was really fun because after that, the story became something about buying someone a Louis Vuitton bag. Although some were really random, the story still followed a certain flow, which was very impressing.

Sophie also brought in an activity called taboo. We all wrote down 4 commonly used words, and mixed them together. Then, each of us picked two cards, and held it in front of us, so that we cant see our own cards, but can see other peoples. The main object of this activity was to make others say the word on the card theyre holding. We came up with words like I, like, yes, ok and it was actually a lot of fun! I was kind of sad because Sophie cut out the worksheet I created for week 3 and used it to make cards, and I was able to tease her with adjectives from the first activity, so that was also fun, too!

Then, for the second half of the class we played a hand game, which was very similar to a Korean game called sonbyungho-game, a game also similar to the popular Never have I ever. We basically had to come up with something that we did, that we think that no one else in the group did. Although the whole point of the game was a lot similar to the ones I already knew, some parts of the game was a bit different, so I was confused at first. However, as we continued on with the game, I got the jist of it which was nice. It was also nice because we were able to get to know each other a bit more, since we shared some of our personal experiences as a part of the game.

Then, we were paired up with the person sitting in front of us, and played an activity where a describer explains a picture and the drawer drew the picture according to the description, especially paying great attention to the position of items in a kitchen. We were able to practice prepositional terms, such as in font, on the left, under, next to, etc. Although it seemed easy at first, it required a very detailed description, thich was confusing at times.

Lastly, we completed a personality test based on what our lipsticks look like, and paired up to guess which personality our partners got by asking questions. My partner was really hard to guess, because it seemed like she had many features from all of the choices. She liked people and was outgoing, which were from different characteristics. In the end, it turned out that she had the same personality category as I did! This was fun to play, and it was another activity that allowed us to get to know our group members more!

* W5 Host Preparing Activity Reflection *

1. Figures Game and Lipstick Type Activity

This time, our host prepared activities in that she think that we should understand each other more. Figures game is about looking for similarities and differences among us. At the beginning, everyone has ten fingers open. Then the runner said her own experiences or features, and if anyone has the same one, runner pull down her finger, and if not, the rest pull down the finger. At the first time it was a bit different from the game I had known before, so it was difficult to understand the game, but while playing it, I got to understand it, so I could enjoy from that moment. There wasnt any restrictions in word use so I feel free while Im talking, but I think it would be more easy to talk if theres any example item such as Looks, Experience, stuff, etc. It was a so nice game, and I feel happy to know more about my team members. After finishing figures game, we played lipstick game. It is to find the type of lipstick which matches with my partners personality. I admit that all the characteristics didnt perfectly match with the lipstick type, but it was interested to see many written explanations about various personalities, which is hard to explain in verbal words. It was a helpful materials to ask to my partner and also answer to my partners question about my personalities.

2. Taboo Word and Objective Bingo Activity

I have really wanted to play it since I heard about this game, and it was so happy for me to hear that our host prepared this game. Each of our members picked taboo paper which contains a word that we wrote before, and we should not mention that word during conversation. We played twice, because it was so fun. It was really good game, in that it draws students great participation and a kind of creativity to lead the target to say her taboo words. After playing this game, we played Objective Bingo game. We have to fill in the 5x5 blanks with the objectives in the word list. Then we can erase the word if I or someone says the word I choose. For me, it was new and seemed educational, because unlike common bingo game, we have to make a sentence to erase the word, whose story is connected with the formers story. It was sad in that story itself doesnt contain big storyline, but it was still good in that we had to say the sentence using the words that we chose. It was an entertaining time.

 Bingo Game and Taboo

At the beginning, we played bingo game, which is that all of us should choose 25 adjectives to fill in the 5*5 blanks and use it to make up a story. Players after players and one sentence after one sentence. The goal was to line up the words that had appeared in sentences. For the input aspect, the host said we can avoid those words that we did not know. Still we are able to guess some words and learn something because others may use words that we did not know. However, if the English level of players are very similar, then we might not be able to learn a lot. Also, we might figure out the wrong meaning of these words. Thus, I think it might be helpful to add tutoring for some lesser-known words! For the output, this game is beneficial. Because we got the opportunity to practice our ability to use adjectives in a context.

Next, we played taboo game. Every player wrote out several words that should be used very often for others to pick blindly. In the rounds, we should make others speak out the words that she picked. As a result, she would try to avoid answering with the most commonly used words. I enjoyed it very much because the target was clear. Moreover, we could again refresh our language library to use the words that had been put in the corner. Between the conversation, we also practiced our spoken English. However, there are still some shortcomings. First, it lacked meaningful input. Second, the host may think of ways to avoid uhm answer or silence of some players because we all know that the more you say, the more you are dangerous.

Figures Game, Lipstick guess and Objects drawing

This time, I am the host. We played figures game first. I told a story of why I chose to host this game in order to make them participate more concentrated. However, as I gave the papers first, so some of the girls did not listen to what I said. Probably I should give papers after giving intro. As they said, they know the game but it was a little different so they got confused. I think I need to ask them what is the game that they know is like and make the game instruction more specific. which was out of my expectation was that the game ended very fast although there are 10 figures. It seemed that everybody had very different experiences. I think I did not use a very good example at first with travel destination because it turned out that everybodys destinations were so different.

Since the last game lasted not very long, I used the game which I did not intend to use as a bonus intensive game to make group members to know more about each other. Unlike the personality test we had before of drawing an elephant, I decided to pair players up and guess their partners lipstick from daily observation and questions asking so that players could read some descriptions about personalities on the paper as a meaningful input and output with discourse.

Last, we played objects drawing. It is a game that seems easy but actually not. Results differ. I think I might change some objects next time.

Bingo

It is the game that is commonly played by many people. However, in order to differentiate from the original version and have some speaking more, the host added some more rules. First, she prepared a list of words in order to limit the boundary of vocabulary usage. Moreover, in order to cross out words, people have to make a sentence with the word they want to erase; and everyone has to make a short story by continuing the sentences. As a result, learners get to think about the words and practice speaking.

I thought this activity was helpful for making sentences instantly because they never know which sentences would come up from others and what the story would be. However, I think the words were quite too easy for the people in our class; and we needed some more complex rules.

Taboo

The second game is called Taboo. Learners were ordered to write a word on the pieces of paper that are commonly used by people. After mixing the cards, they get to choose two and show others. One cannot see her words and others have to make her say the words by asking questions or talking to her.

In my own opinion, this activity is helpful for free-talking. This is because in order to make one say a certain word, people have to ask questions freely and keep talking to each other.

Finger Game

I was quite familiar with this game so it was easy to play the game right away. One had to say something that is applicable only for her. And if the other person is relevant with it, the one who said has to fold the finger and vice versa.

I thought this activity was helpful for learners to think about the activity they did in the past and try to make sentences related to it. In this way we can practice making sentences and improve speaking ability.

Lipstick Game

It was kind of personality game. After reading some characteristics based on the shape of the lipstick, we have to guess which one is suitable for our partner. By asking some questions we could get some information and I thought this activity would be perfect for ice-breaking game.

Although there is not much speaking activity, I think it is very good for group activity as we get to talk to our member. Moreover, not only our partner but also we could know about ourselves, and how others think about me. I loved this gameJ

On the fifth week, we did four activities. Our two group members hosted these activities and it was very univeral in Korea because lots of Korean people had done these activities before. However, I think all of them were really interesting and useful to teach speaking skills.

1. Bingo Game

Bingo game is very universal in the world, but this bingo game was a little bit different from original bingo game. First, students made a bingo with lots of adjectives which mean feeling. Second, students made a story by using the words in the bingo and erase the adjectives they used. Finally, students who erased three lines at the first won the game. I and my group members made such an interesting story and I won the game. I think it can be really helpful after learning expressing feelings because the examples of bingo words were like surprising, annoying, awful and exhausted. Moreover, it can stimulates students' creativitiy because it needs creating story. Students can learn various feeling adjectives by creating their own story.

2. Taboo Game

Taboo game is also universal because lots of Korean celebrities did this game on the TV program. First, each students wrote two words on the two pieces of paper. Second, students pick two papers randomly and students could not see the paper. However, another students can see her paper. Third, students could talk freely with each other. Finally, students could not say two words they picked up. If they said these words, they would lose the game. I picked 'hate' and 'don't know' and I didn't know what I chose. Fortunately, I didn't lose the game because I found different expressions having same meaning with 'hate' and 'don't know' My group member asked "Do you like cucumbers'? and I answered "Cucumber is disgusting to me" instead of using "I hate cucumbers". In my opinion, it is useful when students learn polynomial language such as "appreciate" and "thankful". Students can learn various polynomial language easily by playing this game.

3. Finger Game

Finger game is very popular because lots of Korean celebrities did this game on the TV program. It is well known as "Son Byung Ho (He is a Korean actor and he created this activity on the TV program) Game" in Korea. The rule is really simple: First, one student said about one's personality or one's exprience such as "I am very shy person" and "I have been to Europe before". Second, student who was relevant should fold the finger. Finally, students who folded all fingers would lose the game. I think this activity is not useful in lesson, but it helpful on ice-breaking time. Student can know very fast by knowing one's personality and experiences and they can get along with each other well.

4. Lipstick Game

Being compared with other three activities, I have never done 'lipstic game' before. However, it was really unique and creative actiivity to me. After learning the relationship between lipstick shape and personality like "Flaptop lipstick means 'You are a conservative person'", we should find other students' personalities by guessing their lipstick shapes. My lipstick shape is rounded and smooth tip, so I am an easy-going person. I think this activity is similar with drawing pig game on the second week's class because both activities were related with guessing other students' personalities. In my opinion, it is helpful to use in ice-breaking time. By guessing partner's personalities, we could get along with each other.
